Waste Anesthetic Gas (WAG) Exposure Monitoring
Waste anesthetic gas is the portion of sevoflurane, isoflurane, desflurane or nitrous oxide that escapes into the room instead of the scavenging system — through mask inductions, circuit disconnects, worn seals, uncuffed pediatric tubes and exhalation in recovery. NIOSH recommends halogenated agents stay at or below 2 ppm as a one-hour ceiling, and 0.5 ppm when used together with nitrous oxide.
