Glutaraldehyde and ortho-phthalaldehyde are respiratory and dermal sensitizers used in open soak basins and automated reprocessors, often in undersized rooms with recirculating air. The ACGIH ceiling for glutaraldehyde is 0.05 ppm — a level people can smell and react to well before conventional sampling catches it, which is why staff complaints usually come first.
