Nitrous Oxide (N₂O) Exposure Monitoring
Nitrous oxide leaks from mask seals, scavenging connections, worn hoses and manifold fittings long before anyone smells it. NIOSH recommends keeping exposure at or below 25 ppm as a time-weighted average during administration, and chronic exposure above that has been associated with neurologic and reproductive effects — which is why staff concerns usually arrive before the regulator does.
Medical Testing Solutions ships passive N₂O dosimetry badges, analyzes them in an AIHA-accredited laboratory, and returns a documented TWA per employee with practical control recommendations if levels are elevated.
Exposure limits we report against
| Limit | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| NIOSH REL (during administration) | 25 ppm TWA | NIOSH Criteria Document |
| ACGIH TLV | 50 ppm 8-hour TWA | ACGIH TLVs |
| OSHA PEL | No specific PEL — General Duty Clause applies | 29 U.S.C. 654(a)(1) |
| Dental operatory guidance | 25 ppm during administration | ADA / NIOSH dental alert |

Controls we recommend when levels are high
Leak-test the nitrous manifold, hoses and quick-connects annually
Use properly sized scavenging nasal hoods and verify vacuum flow (typically 45 LPM)
Increase room air exchanges in the operatory where feasible
Coach patients to limit mouth breathing and talking during administration
Turn off N₂O flow before removing the hood and flush with 100% oxygen
Re-monitor after any equipment change, remodel or HVAC modification
Craftsmanship Warranty Included
Every service is backed by our craftsmanship warranty — we stand behind our work.
