Medical Gas Central Supply System Identification and Labeling
1. Cylinder, Container, and Tank Compliance
Cylinders, containers, and tanks must comply with the regulations set by the Department of Transportation (DOT), Transport Canada (TC), or the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
2. Cylinder Identification
- Contents must be labeled according to CGA C-7 standards.
- Liquid containers must have identification visible from all directions, with at least 2-inch high letters or a 360-degree wraparound tape.
- Outlet connections for cryogenic liquid containers must follow CGA V-5 or CGA V-1 standards.
- Outlet connections must be integral to the valve, unremovable with ordinary tools, or rendered unusable if removed.
- Labels must remain intact and unmodified.
3. Signage for Source Locations
For Positive-Pressure Gases (excluding oxygen and medical air)
Rooms storing these gases must have signage that states:
POSITIVE-PRESSURE GASES
NO SMOKING OR OPEN FLAME
ROOM MAY HAVE INSUFFICIENT OXYGEN
OPEN DOOR AND ALLOW ROOM TO VENTILATE BEFORE ENTERING
For Oxygen or Medical Air
Signage must state:
MEDICAL GASES
NO SMOKING OR OPEN FLAME
Smoking Policy Exception
In healthcare facilities where smoking is prohibited, signs may omit the reference to smoking.
4. Central Supply System Operations
- Adapters and conversion fittings that modify gas-specific fittings are prohibited.
- Cylinders and containers must be handled per strict guidelines.
- Storage rooms should only contain gas cylinders, reusable shipping containers, and accessories.
- Flammable materials must not be stored with gas cylinders.
- Temperature regulations:
- Cylinders must be kept below 125°F (52°C).
- Nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide systems must stay above -7°C (20°F) but below 125°F (52°C).
- Cylinder valve protection caps must be secured unless in use.
- Cylinders should be kept away from heat sources such as radiators or steam piping.
- Caution should be exercised when handling cylinders exposed to freezing temperatures.
